Just wrote this note for Mum hoping she can hang on in there. Completely understand if she decides otherwise...
Hi Mum
I'm not sure which version of the iPhone u have.
I went to the Apple Store because my phone kept running the battery down every two hours and they said that I need to be more "resourceful" with the iPhone when not in use.
6 things can make a difference.
1.Turn 3G off
2.Turn wireless off
3.Turn Cellular data off
4.Turn Location Services off
5.Close down recently used apps.
6.Turn Bluetooth off (I don't use this and I'm not sure u do either)
If they are left on they are continually working in the background, syncing the iPhone to the cloud or doing whatever it is these iPhones do and cud be costing u money as well as running the power out of the phone.

When u want to use the iPhone, depending on what u want to do switch services back on again.
When not using the Internet (safari) or email switch off 3G, wireless, location services, Cellular Data
To do this :
7. Wifi : Settings, Wifi, On or off
8. 3G and Cellular Data : Settings, General, network ,
8.1. Enable 3G on or off
8.2 Cellular Data on or off.
(8.2 Is annoying because when u go to send a text message a box will keep coming up asking u to switch it on. Ignore this. The text msg still gets sent.)
9. Location Services : Settings, General, Location Settings on or off. (useful for google maps if u need directions/social networking like Google Buzz and Apps like National Rail). Switch back on only after 3G/wireless is on.
10. To turn recently used apps off double click the indented button at bottom ofi Phone and ur most recently used apps are displayed. Press and hold down on one of the apps until they start shaking and a little white cross on red background comes up. Touch the cross to close the app and keep doing this until all the apps have gone.

So if everything is off u can still take and receive calls and send and receive text messages although an annoying cellular data box comes up which u can ignore. (8.2)
When using the iPhone for anything other than as a phone switch things on which can help and then remember to switch them off.
Email and or Internet : if at home (or in a wireless area) switch on wireless (see 7 above). Remember to switch off when finished.
If elsewhere switch on 3G and cellular data - see 8, 8.1, 8.2
If u're r using an app which requires location services on then switch on location services (9 above)
Call me if I can help u further
A final alternative might be to reset the iPhone (back up 1st or write numbers down) to factory settings (apple store) and do not update the software further on this iPhone (back up phone first)
Or
Choose another mobile phone that better suits ur needs.
I truly hope this helps
rX
